RTE Liveline listeners hear Luas chaos as teens storm tram and man smokes crack pipe

A green line Luas tram was turned into chaos on rails after rowdy teens without tickets stormed the train and a man struck up a crack pipe in full view of passengers.

Dubliner David Brooks was heading into the city centre to see a friend for the first time since the pandemic started when he got caught up in the madness.

He was speaking to RTE Radio 1's Liveline after the show spoke to Luis, the man who told Dublin Live he was attacked in a racially-motivated assault at Heuston Station after getting off a red line Luas, and witness Dave Donnelly.

He told Joe Duffy the full details of his mad ride into the city centre after getting on the tram at Broombridge.

"I was going into town on the Luas, for the first time in more than a year, to meet a friend," David said.

"What I first noticed going through town was the lack of gardai present in the streets, but what was worse everyone getting on the Luas didn’t seem to have masks, or tickets.

"And to top it all, we got to Marlborough Street, this fella got on and sat beside me. He said ‘do you mind if I sit there’ and I said ‘yeah no problem’.

"By the time we got to Trinity College, he’d struck up his crack pipe! On the Luas!

"We jumped off just after Trinity College."

David also emphasised that he noticed little garda presence at all in the city all night, as well as not seeing a single security guard on the tram.

"It was my first time on the Luas for over a year, and I didn’t see any security on the Luas at all," he added.

"I would have been leaving town around 11 that night to go and get a taxi home and again, a distinct lack of garda presence from Grafton Street down to O’Connell Street."

Dublin Live have contacted Luas operator Transdev for comment on the matter.
