RTE Liveline listeners divided after nutritionist tells Joe Duffy that Weetabix is 'dessert for breakfast'

Anyone who tuned into Wednesday afternoon's edition of Liveline will have been thoroughly entertained as a debate started over the benefits of having Weetabix for breakfast.

Nutritionist Fawn Clarke called in to the popular radio show to tell host Joe Duffy that the famous biscuits can actually be quite bad for us due to the level of sugar inserted into them.

In fact, she claimed that the new Weetabix Chocolate, which is on supermarket shelves across the country, was the equivalent of "having dessert for breakfast"

She said: "A food company's goal is to sell more & make profit, not to make us healthier"

This was countered by a number of other callers including John, who avoids sugar as much as he could.

There was even a claim made that sugar "is a natural fat".

Your average serving (2 biscuits) of Weetabix Chocolate contains 7.7g of sugar - 9% of the RDA for adults.

And the show caused quite a stir on social media.

One person said: "Kids are fat because of their parents. They buy & prepare the majority of the food.

Another tweeted: "Here’s a novel idea, just don’t buy something you don’t want."

While a third joked: "I've never had chocolate but I'm going to buy some this week just to spite Joe Duffy and the cantankerous aul bags ringing in."

A fourth asked: "What kind of stupid parent would give a child chocolate cereal? Plenty of them out there, obvs."

It was all summed up rather neatly by another social media user, who said: "Is this really #liveline today or an Apres Match special?
