RTE Liveline caller tells Joe Duffy she's horrified by the use of the 'p word' in carbon monoxide alarm ad

Liveline is known for tackling some of the most important stories in Irish society on a daily basis.

Today was no different - as ahead of the major Government announcement later and in the middle of the Beacon hospital scandal, Joe Duffy had callers on to discuss Tommy McAnairey.

If you aren't sure who that is, we're here to help: he's the singing canary in the ad from Gas Networks Ireland who tells us all about how to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

But one listener saw the ad and realised she had to talk to Joe about it - picking out the word "poxy" as one of her main gripes.

Monica in Drogheda said that the issue "shouldn't be made fun of".

''I don't think what they're saying has ANYTHING to do with carbon monoxide. And they use that 'p word' in it. I saw the ad and I said 'I'm going to ring Joe Duffy about that'''

She was backed up by another caller, Tom.

"A doctor should come on or someone who deals with this. You wouldn't think it was about a serious subject."

But Mary in Laois made the point that if a doctor came on to an ad, it would see people switching off to avoid bad news - saying the ad was fun and drew your attention to the 'well-made' ad.

And people online were stunned it was even a discussion.

''I come for the outrage about the Beacon Vaccine scandal, I stay for the giving out about an advert featuring a singing canary'' said one Twitter user.

''Sweet suffering beard of Zeus, #Liveline just took an almighty left turn from the scandal of vaccine queue-jumping teachers to someone now having a pop at the balladeering canary in the carbon monoxide TV ads.'' added another.

While another questioned just how bad things had got during lockdown for this to be a topic of discussion on national radio.

''Is she seriously complaining about a carbon monoxide alarm ad? Jesus lockdown is really going to peoples heads''
