RTE Liveline caller points out to Joe Duffy a strange inconvenience in Irish supermarkets

RTE's Joe Duffy was left perplexed after hearing from some Irish shoppers about a strange rule imposed by supermarkets.

Callers contacted Liveline on Monday afternoon to discuss the merits of non-alcoholic versions of drinks like gin, wine and beer.

Many were full of praise for the alcohol-free versions, with one man hailing the fact that he could have a 'gin and tonic' and drive home, while another woman was glad to wake up after a night out knowing she didn't do anything "silly".

But one revelation during the segment led to a surprising discovery about certain rules in place in Irish supermarkets.

According to one listener, people can't purchase non-alcoholic versions of our favourite tipples outside license hours.

This means that despite the drinks not containing any alcohol, they can only be sold within the same time period allocated for boozy beverages.

One caller said: "What I have a bit of a grievance with is in all these supermarkets, you can't buy [non-alcoholic drinks] before 10am, the same as the licensing laws.

"They have them sectioned off but when they go to scan it [outside licensing hours] it won't scan.

"I don't know why, I've asked them and most of the staff say they don't know, they think that's it's too difficult to segregate.

"If you're there doing your shopping it's a bit of a pain, you're there with everyone else [trying to buy alcohol] waiting for your bottles."

The same woman praised alcohol-free alternatives for not giving hangovers and not making you "do anything silly".

"You're there, you're not doing anything silly, you don't have anything to apologise for the next morning, it's absolutely brilliant," she added.
