Kellie Harrington's long-time partner Mandy Loughlin revealed live on air how they first met 13 years ago.
Olympic champion Kellie defeated Beatriz Ferreira of Brazil to win the gold medal in the lightweight division on Sunday.
The Dubliner would trek all the way to Bray to train 13 years ago where she first met Mandy.
It wasn't love at first sight as Kellie had previously said her first impression of the Foxrock girl was that she was "cocky" and "full of herself".
But as time went on the two grew close and have been inseparable since.
Speaking about how she met Kellie, Mandy said: "We met 13 years ago in boxing when she used to have to trek over to Bray to train where I was training at the time.
"We met there and clicked and the rest is history. There was an initial [vibe that they wouldn't get along] the first time we met but after that we were grand.
"I suppose it's just such a difference - a north inner city girl and a southside girl might just not get on straight away but opposites obviously attract and it was the best thing ever."
Kellie and Mandy live together with their two adorable dogs Nidge and Maisie.
She told Ryan Tubridy on RTE Radio One: "We have a little French Bulldog, Nidge, who's three and a Staffy, Maisie, she's 12. They're just gorgeous. They're absolutely babies. They don't know they're dogs. They think they're human beings."
Mandy, who doesn't usually watch Kellie's fights as she gets too nervous, went to Portland Row on Sunday morning to watch her final bout.
Describing the atmosphere as "magical", Mandy said the waves of people who had turned up to watch the historic win was "unbelievable".
Kellie is the ninth person to win gold for Ireland since 1924.
