RTE listeners shaken by man who 'wasn't able to move' after horror spiking in Irish pub

A young man has opened up on how he was left with the worst hangover imaginable after being spiked on a night out with friends.

Damien told RTÉ 2FM’s Jennifer Zamparelli about his own experience of being spiked, in the hope it would help someone else listening.

Jennifer shared that a lot of male listeners had sent the show messages about being spiked.

Damien had been with a few of his friends, when they went to a pub, then decided to go to a nightclub after.

The brave guest said: “I was in a house with a few of the lads, we went to the pub, we said we’d go to a nightclub, I was there an hour, and I went to the toilet and started not feeling well.

“I thought maybe it was something I ate or drank, roughly 10 minutes after that, I was absolutely out of it, my head started spinning, falling over myself, my sight was blurry, one of the lads laughed, said I had too much gargle, they noticed and said it’s not like you to be like this, they got me out of the club."

Jennifer added “luckily your friends were there”, and asked him did he leave his drink down.

Damien added: “One of us would mind the drink if we were going the toilet, it had to have been something in the drink, the pub we were in beforehand we kinda know the lads in there, the next day was the worst hangover, I wasn’t able to move at all.

“At the time I didn’t even think of these things and you’re trying to think of the night before, I was hardly able to move, I was in bits.”

Jennifer said the biggest thing she had taken from the last few days, was how ‘lucky’ people were that they had someone to look after them, like a friend or someone with them that recognises how this is abnormal.

Damien said: “You question yourself, it was a long time ago, you wouldn’t think who would do that, and who would want to do that to you."

A lot of people are coming forward. Damien agreed it was shocking the number of people that were coming forward.

An 18-year-old listener sent in a text to share her own account of being spiked on a weekend away with friends.

The listener described how her group of friends didn’t get into a pub because they had nowhere booked.

She recalled waking up the next day at home, and just remembered a boy bringing her down an alley. Her friends informed her that paramedics called them 3km from where she had gone missing, and she was covered in dirt, with her Snapchat location switched off.

The listener added: “I have never done drugs, and would never. I feel like I’m always looking over my shoulder.”

After reading out the text, Jennifer said, “That is terrifying, this is not just about girls, or people spiking girls, it happens to everyone. to men, everyone is vulnerable apparently it looks like when they are on a night out.”
