RTE listeners accuse Dublin Minister of 'mansplaining' in heated debate

RTE listeners have been hitting out at Dublin South West TD, Colm Brophy, after his appearance on Saturday with Katie Hannon.

Many have been accusing Minister Brophy of 'mansplaining' during a heated debate with the host and guests over current Covid issues.

When speaking about the problem of infection rates in schools, the Minister of State continued to speak over Eoin O’Broin and Jennifer Whitmore as they tried to voice their opinions on the matter.

At one point, Brophy defended continuously interrupting Jennifer Whitmore, with a response that further riled up listeners this afternoon.

He said; “I’m not talking over you, I’m just correcting what you’re saying.”

Since the interview aired, listeners have been flooding Twitter in anger with one writing: “What is it about these Govt TDs? Are they intentionally sent out to make the public more angry?”

Another said: “Government Ministers and TDs should be less worried about public health experts talking to the media, and more worried about allowing FG attack dog Colm Brophy on-air — continuing to interrupt guests even after pleas from presenter Katie Hannon, patronising guests & the public.”

A third wrote: “You know that government is in the bunker when they send Colm Brophy out to bat."

A final listener said: ”Some of the good taking points Colm Brophy is making are falling flat because of his aggressive manner.

“His style might work on short segments against an opposite spokesperson, but is really not suited to a panel show like this with a lot of time.”
