RTE legend Charlie Bird gives update after 'overwhelming response' to health admission

RTE broadcasting legend Charlie Bird has thanked the public for the "overwhelming response" after he opened up on his speech issues last week.

The retired broadcaster revealed last Friday that he had to turn down multiple interview requests due to health problems.

Charlie tweeted at the time: "Declined two radio interviews today on Don Tidey kidnap and shoot out which I reported on at the time.

"Why - over the past four months I’ve had major issues with my speech. Despite series of tests still don’t know what is going on.

"Thanks to my pals for their support. Stay safe."

In an update to his followers today, he said: "Last week I posted a message about my speech issues.

"I have been overwhelmed by the positive response from all over the country.

"I can’t respond to everyone but I want to thank people from the bottom of my heart.

"I’m fortunate as others are facing more serious issues. Stay safe."

Bird, now aged in his 70s, retired from RTE back in 2021.

He had been chief news reporter for the channel's current affairs shows until 2008 and had a brief stint as Washington correspondent - a role now filled by Brian O'Donovan.

Bird also had a role on TV3's current affairs shows for a short time up until 2016.
