RTE legend Charlie Bird 'cries every single day' and shares heartbreaking update on life length

RTE legend Charlie Bird says he cries every single day as he struggles to come to terms with his Motor Neurone Disease.

The legendary RTE broadcaster revealed in October that he had been diagnosed with the disease having notices issues with his speech.

Speaking to the RTE Guide, Mr Bird said: "I cry every single day.

"On the dark days, and there are dark days, I cry and I wish I didn’t.

"I feel embarrassed with people sitting opposite me but I can’t help it.

"At the moment I’m not dealing with it very well. I’m struggling, I know it. I will soon be dead."

"I wont see my grandkids grow up. I won’t see them getting married. I’m leaving Claire behind and I’m leaving two daughters."

Charlie previously revealed that he’s planned his funeral and he has no regrets about how he lived his life.

He revealed: “My voice will go first. And my voice has been me. My voice will weaken, but whether it goes completely they don’t know.

“And it’s an awful conversation to have, about whether I should record my voice into a voice bank so that when eventually you’ve no voice, you can use it on a computer.”

The ex-news correspondent has been buoyed by support since he tweeted news that he has the terminal condition.

Charlie, whose career at RTE spanned almost four decades, said he’s particularly proud of his achievements because he never went to university.

He retired from the state broadcaster in 2012.
