RTE legend Charlie Bird asks the public to walk with him in aid of Samaritans

RTE legend Charlie Bird will lead a 5km forest walk in aid of Samaritans - and he is asking members of the public to join him.

The veteran broadcaster was diagnosed with Motor neurone disease in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic. He famously launched the "Climb For Charlie" campaign where he and other celebrities climbed Croagh Patrick to raise awareness about the condition.

Charlie said: "I am so excited about this coming Sunday when I am going to lead the walk for Samaritans forest walk in Avondale near Rathdrum in County Wicklow. We will be heading off at about 11 o'clock and fingers crossed about the weather - hopefully it is good.

"Samaritans are having walks in in other parts of the country so just go to www.charlieswalkoffriendship.com. Hopefully you can join a walk near you.

"This weekend is really important for me. I want to highlight the work that Samaritans volunteers do all over the country. What I call their friendly ear of friendship - they provide 365 days a year and seven days a week and 24 hours a day.

"They are there to listen to people who might be in a dark place and, really importantly, they do so without passing judgement. In my own working career, I knew of at least six people who died by suicide."

Charlie added that the "friendly listening ear" has changed the direction of more than a few people's lives. For information and registration visit www.charlieswalkoffriendship.com.
