RTE legend Bryan Dobson pays fitting tribute to 'irreplaceable' colleague as broadcaster Sean O'Rourke retires

Bryan Dobson was one of the first people to pay tribute to legendary RTE broadcaster Sean O'Rourke just minutes after he announced his retirement from the National Broadcaster this morning.

The veteran journalist, who has worked with RTE since the 1980s, presenting programmes like Morning Ireland, This Week and The Week in Politics, will finish up his daily morning radio show on May 8.

In a fitting and short tribute on Twitter, Dobbo said that his fellow colleague would be "irreplaceable".

He said: "Sean O’Rourke announces he will retire from the RTE Radio Today show on Friday 8th May.

"Of only a few broadcasters can it be said they are truly irreplaceable - Sean O’Rourke is most definitely one of that select group."

In a statement at the end of his daily show 'Today With Sean O'Rourke' this morning, he said: "For nearly seven years now it’s been my great privilege to sit in the best current affairs chair in Irish broadcasting.

"But nothing is forever. I’m going to be 65 in May. And that’ll be as good a time as any to end the great adventure of Today SOR.

"I’ve had an absolute ball - daily interviews, debates, elections, referendums, a memorable encounter with the Donald in Doonbeg... some great music and song, and the odd bit of hand-to-hand studio combat.

"All of it with a light dusting of fun, as we promised you at the very start. And all made possible by really talented, hard-working and loyal colleagues, to whom I’ll be forever grateful."
