RTE Late Late Show viewers praise Keith Earls after 'powerful' interview

RTE Late Late Show viewers have commended Irish Rugby star Keith Earls after his 'brave' interview on tonight's show.

The Munster and Ireland winger was on the show tonight for the first time alongside host Ryan Tubridy as he walked viewers through the challenges he's faced growing up and during his extensive career.

Earls explained his upbringing in Moyross, including witnessing a shooting as a youngster and how he suffered his first panic attack at the age of 12.

The 34-year-old opened up on the other side to his personality, which he has named 'Hank', representing negative thoughts and anxiety in his mind.

Earls' struggles resulted in him seeking professional help while part of the Ireland setup in 2013, and he was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 and has worked to manage the disorder in recent years.

But the Moyross man sent a message to others suffering, and hopes his story can help some in a similar position.

And viewers took to social media to praise the rugby star.

"Keith Earls is an inspiration, fantastic person," one viewer said.

Another added: "Very powerful and honest from Keith Earls. He really is a class act."

"Incredible interview with Keith Earls. Fair play to him for sharing his story," one said.

"What a brave man, showing that the stigma around BiPolar 1 & 2 - and even telling the difference between them - is misplaced! An example as a person as well as a sports superstar," one said.

Earls has been named in the Reds side for tomorrow night's interprovincial derby against Connacht, a particularly emotional occasion for Munster as they pay tribute to the late Anthony Foley.

Marking the five year anniversary since the Munster legend's passing, Peter O’Mahony captains the side on his 150th appearance with Earls named at outside centre.

Earls has earned 93 caps in the green of Ireland, and will be at Andy Farrell's disposal for the upcoming November internationals and 2022 Six Nations after signing a new IRFU deal earlier this year.

The deal means the 34-year-old veteran will remain at Munster until at least June next year.
