RTE Late Late Show viewers fume at Ryan Tubridy's 'embarrassing' Lady Gaga question

RTE's Late Late Show enjoyed a bumper line-up on Friday night as host Ryan Tubridy was joined by a host of big names.

Undoubtedly the biggest was pop sensation Lady Gaga, but Boyzone's Ronan Keating also helped offer some star power.

Gaga joined the show from London to discuss the role she took so seriously she lived as her character, Patrizia Reggiani, for a year and a half during filming both on and off-camera.

Ryan also spoke to the Oscar winner about her own experience with bullying and her friendship with fellow musician Tony Bennett.

But unfortunately not all viewers were impressed with the interview, as some branded Tubridy's questioning "embarrassing" and even "unwatchable".

One topic that brought particular scrutiny was Tubs' comparison of Italian-Americans and Irish-Americans, with Gaga responding: “No, we are not far from each other. I also think that there is a real story right, where our family comes over and then there is an assimilation process.

"Meaning like what it means to be Irish American is different than being Irish. Right so like those are two different things. So being Italian American which is what I am is different to being Italian meaning and that informed the role for me...

“Also, what was her [Patrizia Gucci] place in the world you know she was much lower class than the Gucci’s they were prestigious, they had an empire, they were shiny and tailored and perfect and had privilege beyond our wildest dreams and she was called weird all the time.

"She actually wasn’t a gold digger… So, I focused a lot on the ethnicity of Patrizia, and making sure that the mannerisms and the way that I played the role was something that was true to a real Italian woman and Italian culture, not Italian American.”

However viewers were quick to criticise the choice to bring up "Irishness", with one viewer writing: "I’ll give Tubridy that, even though he knows Gaga is Italian American and has no Irish he still managed to slip an Irish heritage question in there in a round about way…that takes commitment."

While another added: "With all respect I sincerely don’t think Gaga cares about Irish or Irish American history or otherwise - she’s here to sell the film! Get to it Ryan."

Meanwhile there was general criticism for the host's performance, with one fan claiming the RTE star was "embarrassing us again".
