RTE Investigates: Inside Ireland's Covid Battle hailed by viewers as 'powerful and essential viewing'

Viewers were moved by a "powerful" and "absolutely gripping" RTE special which offered a glimpse at life inside an Irish hospital during the coronavirus pandemic.

RTE Investigates: Inside Ireland's Covid Battle, which aired on Monday night, has been labelled by many as "essential viewing".

It broadcast footage recorded by camera crews over nearly 30 days of filming in St James's Hospital in Dublin during May and June.

The show gave an insight into life on the frontline in of the country's busiest Intensive Care Units as hospital staff to save the lives of many struck down by Covid-19.

The programme unsurprisingly trended highest on Twitter in Ireland, with political leaders and healthcare workers all taking social media to praise the special.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said: "Tonight’s RTE Investigates was a stark reminder, as restrictions are relaxed, of the indiscriminate cruelty of Covid-19 and the threat it represents.

"The courage, dedication and sensitivity of the team at @stjamesdublin, like @HSELive staff across the country, is an inspiration."

Labour leader Alan Kelly: "RTE Investigates tonight has been absolutely gripping viewing and a reminder of the brutal devastation Covid has caused.

"Let’s always remember the amazing work we saw by our frontline heroes first hand tonight!"

Dr Mary McAuliffe said: "Difficult but essential viewing - just shows we all need to help prevent a second wave.

"And the care provided by nursing, medical and other hospital staff is truly extraordinary - great people."

Dublin-based doctor Knut Moe said: "If anyone needed a reminder to wear a mask, wash your hands and resist the temptation to book holidays abroad, then #RTEInvestigates is it.

"Moving stories of those fighting Covid-19 and some losing their battles. Thoughts with their families and doctors and nurses caring for them."

Cavan doctor Marie Scully posted: "As restrictions ease I hope everyone is watching #RTEInvestigates to see the reality of #COVID19 and its effects on people - the patients, their families, and the heroic healthcare staff who care for them all."

Dr Sinead Toomey said: " #RTEInvestigates is incredibly difficult to watch. Anyone who is not taking the risk of a resurgence of #COVID19 seriously really needs to watch #InsideIrelandsCovidBattle."

Nurse Ger de Bu said: "I work as an end of life nurse and I'm finding it hard not to get emotional watching this #RTEInvestigates Please keep washing your hands and wear your mask for those few minutes when you're in a crowded place. It WILL make a difference. It IS that simple."

Trainee doctor Neassa Conneally said: "Watching #rteinvestigates on a tea break on my night shift in the Covid ED, it’s actually amazing how much I’ve forgotten how frightened we all were in March and April, it must be a thing the brain does to protect itself."

Hospital worker Anthony O'Connor tweeted: "Next time you hear someone saying 'the real damage was from the lockdown measures, not the virus itself.' No. It was the virus. Sit the f*** down. #RTEInvestigates."
