RTE colleagues lead tributes as former 2FM DJ Simon Young dies

Tributes have poured in for former 2FM radio DJ Simon Young after news broke that he had died.

The DJ, real name Thomas Meade, started his career in pirate radio and DJing in the 1970s and was now living in Clondalkin, Dublin.

Mr Young, 61, was known for presenting shows such as The Beatbox and made contributions to the cult children's television strand Dempsey's Den, hosted by his colleague Ian Dempsey.

In the 80s, he presented shows titled Simon's Choice or Simon's Saturday Choice on Saturday mornings between 10:00-13:00pm.

Radiowaves FM took to Twitter to break the sad news saying: "Another radio legend has left us. Simon Young, a veteran of Irish radio from the 70s pirates through to his years with the national broadcaster passed away today.

"R.I.P. to him and condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time."

Mr Youngs former colleague Ian Dempsey also paid tribute to the DJ.

He said: "Extremely Sad news about Thomas Anthony Meade AKA Simon Young RIP - a naturally deep thinking soul loving funny friend."

Derek O'Brien posted: "He bought much humour into many lives - Simon was a very talented Jock with an exceptional love of dance music.

"Forever with a twinkle in his eye and finding a joke to liven up any room he walked into. I've many wonderful memories of our decade on Ian's breakfast show on 2FM.

"His kindness to everyone in a business that can at the best of times by ruthless. Rest in Peace Simon, one story comes to mind as I reminisce of time we spent as friends - Simon from an early age, had ambitions to work for the National Broadcast.

"He told me 'having a relation already in there is a help, yes you need a bit of talent, but look at the RTE guide - there's the answer'. Simon said it's a moustache, every DJ in 2FM has a moustache- Simon grew a red moustache and got a job on 2FM."
