RTE break silence and confirm Eoghan McDermott will not return to 2FM radio show

RTE has confirmed that DJ Eoghan McDermott will no longer be working for 2FM.

However, Doireann Garrihy will remain with the breakfast show as it moves in a "new direction."

Since taking annual leave, McDermott has not been on-air and he will no longer present the Breakfast Show he has hosted alongside Doireann Garrihy for the past two years.

Since joining RTE from Spin FM in 2014, McDermott has featured on a number of shows across TV and radio.

The 37-year-old's shock decision comes after he took unplanned annual leave two weeks ago.

In a statement, the broadcaster said: "RTÉ confirms that Eoghan McDermott will not be returning to RTÉ 2FM.

"His contract is due to expire shortly. RTÉ is developing a new direction for the 2FM Breakfast Show which will be revealed in the coming weeks. Doireann Garrihy will remain with the show."

While no official announcement has been made yet about McDermott's replacement, RTÉ radio host Carl Mullan has seen his odds for the role on 2FM slashed.

The Irish Daily Star learned during the week that Carl could be next in line to join Doireann in the mornings.

And now the odds on him replacing Eoghan have tumbled, according to bookmakers.

BoyleSports has trimmed the host of the RTE Player series ‘Go Outside’ into 5/1 from 25/1 to work alongside Doireann.

Marty Guilfoyle remains the 3/1 favourite to replace Eoghan on the breakfast show - should his departure from 2FM be confirmed.
