The Kremlin-backed news channel RT is facing another investigation by the broadcasting regulator, this time over a report accusing the Turkish government of genocide against Kurds.

Ofcom has launched an investigation into the channel, previously called Russia Today, for two broadcasts of its “Going Underground” investigative news show.

RT says Going Underground “discovers the stories that aren’t being covered by the mainstream UK media” and “brings a fresh perspective to our audiences around Britain”.

Ofcom has launched a formal investigation looking at two broadcasts of an edition of the show, broadcast on the fifth and 23rd March, that looked at the policies and actions of the Turkish government.

The programme contained criticisms of the Turkish government and claimed it is carrying out genocide against the Kurdish community.

“We’re investigating whether the programme’s discussions regarding the actions and the policies of the Turkish government breached our impartiality rules,” said an Ofcom spokesman.

Since RT started broadcasting in the UK around 10 years ago, Ofcom has recorded breaches of the UK broadcasting rules on 14 occasions.

In September, Ofcom moved to sanction RT over four breaches of the broadcasting code relating to misleading or biased programmes covering the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria.
