MYSURU: Praising RSS as a social organization that focuses on disciplining youths, former Union minister and Dalit leader V Srinivasa Prasad on Saturday asked the right-wing organization to launch a fight against untouchability.
Speaking at an event where RSS senior leader M Vankataramu was felicitated, he said if RSS takes up the fight against untouchability India could well get rid of it which continues even after Independence.
Remembering his childhood days, Prasad said that he and Venkataramu hail from the same Ashokapuram area in the city. "We both worked as volunteers for the RSS and learnt a lot from RSS," he stated.
He said he honestly worked for uplift of downtrodden communities throughout his political career and will be retiring from electoral politics after he completes his term as the MP of Chamarajanagar.
Inhumane practices like penalising Dalit members for entering a temple should be banned. He added. The RSS, he urged, should strive hard to build an equitable society besides envision the dreams of Swami Vivekananda- a caste-free society.
Senior RSS leader Su Ramanna stressed on the unification of Hindu organizations and the need to take everyone along all including dalits to build a prosperous and harmonious country. RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale appealed to the youths to be involved in nation building activities.
Suttur Mutt seer Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami, KSOU vice chancellor S Vidyashankar and the Karnataka State Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University vice chancellor Nagesh V Bettakote were present.
