RSPCA warning to pet owners after three cats killed in 'spate of suspected poisonings'

Cat owners have been warned to "be vigilant" after three cats died of "suspected poisoning".

The pets all died within the last month in the Vanburgh Court/ Sandown Close area of Seaton Delaval, Northumberland.

Inspectors say they've reported the incidents to Northumbria Police, who say they don't currently have any evidence the pets were targeted on purpose.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: "It is not known if it is deliberate or accidental so we are asking cat owners to please be vigilant and to be aware of what is poisonous to cats."

The list of toxic ingredients includes:

  • Paracetamol
  • Anti- freeze
  • White spirit
  • Benzalkonium chloride- a common ingredient in household disinfectant and some patio cleaners
  • Slug and snail pellets
  • Weed killers
  • Rodent poison
  • Other toxic cleaners (especially those containing phenols)

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We are aware of these incidents but at this stage there is no evidence these animals have been targeted maliciously. If anyone has information that these animals have been targeted on purpose then we would ask you to contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999 or the police on 101.”
