RSPCA to investigate after dead heron found wrapped in IKEA bag

Officers at the RSPCA have launched an investigation after a dead heron was found wrapped in an IKEA bag at a beauty spot near Bristol.

A jogger discovered the wild bird's body in Frenchay this morning, Sunday (July 21).

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous,  immediately reported the death to both the RSPCA and RSPB.

She said: "On my run this morning I came across a dead heron that had been wrapped up in a blue IKEA bag and parceled up with duct tape, left on a footpath by the river in Frenchay.

"I've reported this to the RSPCA and RSPB as suspected bird cruelty."

The animal charity has now launched an appeal for witnesses.

A spokesperson said: "The RSPCA has been called about a dead heron found wrapped in an IKEA bag that had been duct-taped together at a Bristol beauty spot this morning (Sunday 21 July).

“The bird was discovered in Cleeve Wood in the Frenchay area at around 8.30am.

“The bird had no obvious injuries, however anyone with any specific information is urged to contact us on 0300 1234 999.

“Wild birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and it is an offence to kill, injure or take them or their eggs.”
