RSL NSW will hold its annual state congress in Newcastle this year, and local members hope to host the event for the next four years.
Acting state president Ray James announced on Thursday morning that up to 700 RSL members would gather at Wests City's Newcastle Exhibition and Convention Centre from October 25 to 27.
The organisation is attempting to remodel itself after financial scandals in its head office led to fraud charges against former president Donald Rowe and a government inquiry.
Mr James said this year's congress marked a "step forward" for the war veterans' charity after it adopted a new constitution last year.
"I'd like to thank the City of Newcastle sub-branch for their input into this process," he said.
"The city has a strong connection with the defence and veteran community, including the RAAF Base Williamtown and one of the state's largest ANZAC Day dawn services."
City of Newcastle sub-branch president Ken Fayle said he hoped to apply successfully to host the congress again from 2021 to 2023.
The state RSL has provided more than $37,000 to veterans and their families dealing with the effects of the recent bushfires.
