CHANDIGARH: The municipal corporation (MC) has paid Rs 35 lakh to IIT Ropar for a detailed project report to upgrade the garbage processing plant that will be submitted by the end of this month or early November.
“Experts and scientists of the IIT had recently visited the plant to take details of equipment and verify machines installed there. Officers and staff explained to them the key areas of works and technical aspects that needed to be looked into for improvement and upgradation. As a waste-to-energy plant has been approved, the experts were given the details accordingly,” said sources in the MC.
The MC has told the institute that the report must mention social impact, technical and financial assessments. The institute had earlier given its plan for preparing their document. The waste-to-energy plant has some environmental issues pointed out by experts. Sources in the civic body said the environment is a crucial part of the study and it wants to fulfil all parameters regarding it.
The MC has already decided to use the services of IIT experts till the end of the project and take their help if any technical issue comes crop up in the functioning of the plant after its upgradation.
Lower fee helped Ropar institute
Three institutes — IIT, Ropar; PEC, Chandigarh; and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, were contacted to give their estimates for detailed project report for upgradation of the garbage processing plant. Only two, IIT and PEC, had responded. Finally, the MC selected IIT due to its lower fee.
