Rs 20 lakh cash found during searches at premises linked to absconding IPS officer Aditya Kumar in Bihar and UP

PATNA: Multiple teams of the Bihar Police’s special vigilance unit (SVU) on Wednesday conducted searches at different properties linked to suspended and absconding IPS officer Aditya Kumar in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

The 2011-batch Bihar cadre IPS officer has been accused of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. He is also wanted in a case for helping liquor mafias while he was posted as senior superintendent of police (SSP) at Gaya.

The simultaneous searches were carried out at his properties in Patna, and Ghaziabad and Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, a senior official of the SVU told TOI on Wednesday.

“During the searches, Rs 20 lakh in cash, bank accounts with deposits of Rs 90 lakh and some documents indicating investments in flats, were found,” the SVU official said in a statement.

“During the searches it was also revealed that Aditya has a plot in the ICS cooperative society in Patna, a flat worth Rs 30 lakh in Vasundhara, Ghaziabad and another flat worth Rs 60 Lakh in Vasi Kunj society, near Saguna More in Patna,” the SVU said.

“Aditya has been accused of possessing assets worth about Rs 1.37 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income,” the SVU said in the statement.

“Searches were conducted at the residential premises of the absconding IPS officer in Patna, Ghaziabad and Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) on the strength of a search warrant issued by the court of special judge vigilance (Patna);” Nayyar Hasnain Khan, the additional director general of police, SVU, said on Wednesday.

Earlier in November this year, the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of the Bihar Police approached the Interpol and requested the authorities concerned to issue a red corner notice against the absconding IPS officer, who is also accused of taking help of a fraudster to get his liquor case closed.

The 2011-batch IPS officer has been on the run for nearly two months. The IPS officer is evading arrest in a case relating to his alleged nexus with the liquor mafias while he was posted as the senior superintendent of police (SSP) in Gaya district.

A major controversy broke out when a fraudster, Abhishek Agarwal, posing as the chief justice of the Patna high court, allegedly called up Bihar DGP S K Singhal several times, asking him to close the case against the IPS officer Aditya Kumar. The state government later suspended the IPS officer after the entire episode came to light.
