According to reports, the groom from Delhi’s Idrisi community married a woman from the same community in an opulent ceremony that has since become a major talking point in the region. The dowry allegedly included ₹1.01 crore in cash, a BMW car, and large quantities of gold and silver jewellery.
Reports also claimed that the person who arranged the marriage was gifted a Scorpio SUV, according to NavBharat Times. Earlier, during the engagement ceremony held around six months ago, the bride’s family had reportedly gifted the groom a Mahindra Thar and ₹31 lakh in cash.
With videos from both ceremonies circulating widely online, the lavish spending and dowry exchange have triggered intense debate on social media, with many users expressing shock over the scale of the gifts and overall wedding expenses, which are estimated to have crossed ₹2 crore.
How has social media reacted
The footage started making the rounds on X in no time, where it rapidly gained attention and crossed 130,000 views within a short time. The post accompanying the video criticised the public display of dowry, calling it a harmful social practice that undermines ethical values associated with marriage traditions.
Social media users reacted strongly, with many expressing shock and anger over the alleged dowry exchange being showcased so openly. Several users questioned how such practices continue despite legal restrictions, while others demanded stricter implementation of anti-dowry laws.
"Call it "Mehr" or whatever it's still selling daughters while preaching equality. Wild cultural," commented one netizen.
"This is not dowry but in fact, “Meher”, also called bride price. This is the amount which is paid by the groom to the bride during the time of nikah (marriage) and is announced in front of everyone like this so as to make all of them witness to the amount of Meher being given," said another.
"Dowry is a sin , let it be in any religion. People should boycott those persons who demand dowry in marriage," another user commented.
"For Gods sake, stop this circus! You don’t have to pay a man to marry your daughter. She’s not a commodity. Sigh," said another netizen.
