RCB IPL 2023 Playoffs: Royal Challengers Bangalore win big to stay on course

Skittle out Rajasthan for 59 to record 112-run win

JAIPUR: It was Royals from Bangalore who came out all guns blazing to register a thumping 112 runs victory over Sanju Samson's outfit in a sink-or-swim clash at the SMS Stadium here on Sunday.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bowlers breathed fire and Rajasthan Royals surrendered meekly in a chase of 172. The hosts were bundled out for 59 in just 10. 3 overs, the third lowest IPL score.

Only Shimron Hetmyer showed some fight and counter attacked with a 19-ball 35, which included 4 sixes and a boundary. Looking listless, no other batter scored more than 10 runs. With this loss, Royals have dropped to the 6th place and their hope of making it to the top-four are virtually over. RCB have jumped to the 5th position and are fully alive in the competition.

Royals never looked like they were playing at home as they could only manage one win this season in Jaipur and to add to their plight, they lacked home support in their last home fixture as the chants of 'Kohli, Kohli' boomed at the ground. Giving no room to Royals, Wayne Parnell, who replaced Josh Hazlewood in the playing XI, along with Mohammed Siraj ran through Royals' power-packed top-order -Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, Samson and Joe Root. While others collaborated to raze off the remaining batters.

In what was a collective effort, seamer Parnell stood out with figures of 3-0-10-3.

IPL 2023: Royal Challengers Bangalore bowl Rajasthan Royals out for 59 to secure big win

Earlier, faced with a challenge to tackle a heavy dose of spin on a slow wicket, RCB put up a great show. They first rode on the brilliance of Glen Maxwell (54 off 33 balls) and then on an aggressive cameo by Anuj Rawat (unbeaten 29 off 11 balls) to upset the good start the hosts had managed with a disciplined spell with the ball.

The spin trio of Adam Zampa, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin ensured RCB moved at slow pace -from 42/0 in the Powerplay to 78/1 in 10 overs. But resurrecting the innings after Virat Kohli's dismissal, captain Faf du Plessis (55 off 44 balls) struck a crucial partnership of 119 runs in 47 balls with Maxwell.

While the latter took no time to get his aerial shots into play, du Plessis bided his time to bring his fifty. First to walk back to the pavilion was Kohli (18 off 19 balls). It was seamer Mohammed Asif who succeeded in deceiving him with a slower knuckle ball in the 7th over and Jaiswal plucked the catch. But the other seniors ensured the team set up a good target.
