Royals who gave up titles for love - divorce scandal and marriage without permission

One of the perks of being born royal is being given a grand title to reflect your regal status.

But having a title can also mean having to live by a strict set of traditions that govern everything from your working life to who you marry.

And for some, being a Prince or Princess or even a King can become too much of a burden and there have been times when royals have traded in their titles so they can be with the ones they love.

Just yesterday, Princess Mako of Japan gave up her title and place in the Japanese Imperial Family so she could wed her college sweetheart Kei Komuro.

Here we take a look at some of the other royals from around the world, who have given up their titles for love...

King Edward VIII

One of the most famous times a royal gave up their title for love - they also gave up the throne.

Edward VIII came to the throne in 1936 after the death of his father George V and at the time, was unmarried.

Less than a year into his reign, he announced his intention to marry twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson.

But he was told by then Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin the marriage would be deemed morally unacceptable, mainly due to the fact back then remarriage after divorce was opposed by the Church of England, of which Edward was the head of.

In December 1936, he then made the decision to abdicate - giving up the throne in order to marry Wallis.

He reverted to be a Prince and was later given the title of Duke of Windsor. His brother, the Queen's father, was later named King George VI.

He married Wallis in June 1937 and the pair remained married until his death in 1972.

As the Queen's beloved husband, Prince Philip had several royal titles - including Duke of Edinburgh.

But before he was allowed to marry her in 1947, he actually had to renounce several other titles he had been given at birth.

That's because he was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, but had to relinquish the titles in order to become a British citizen so he could marry the then Princess Elizabeth.

He also adopted his maternal grandparents surname of Mountbatten before marrying.

Princess Mako

The latest royal to trade in her title for marriage is Japan's Princess Mako.

She is the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko of Japan. Her uncle is Emperor Naruhito, who took to the Chrysanthemum Throne in May 2019.

Mako met her now-husband Kei Komuro, a commoner, while the pair were both studying at the International Christian University in Tokyo.

They became engaged in 2017 but even then she knew she'd have to give up her title and leave the imperial family as it's law if royal women marry commoners.

The pair tied the knot yesterday, and there were emotional scenes as she said farewell to her parents and younger sister upon leaving the family to start a new life with her husband in the US.

Like Princess Mako, Princess Ayako of Japan also had to give up her royal status upon marriage.

She too married a commoner, Kei Moriya, in October 2018, and in line with Japanese law, relinquished her title and place in the imperial family.

The pair had met a year earlier and in November 2019, Ayako gave birth to the couple's first child - a son.

Princess Ubolratana

Princess Ubolratana is the sister of Thailand's King Vajiralongkorn and the oldest child of the former King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej.

In the early 1970s, she attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she started dating American Peter Jensen.

Her parents are said to have strongly opposed the relationship but Ubolratana married Jensen, despite her their wishes - losing her royal title in the process.

The couple lived in San Diego, California, and had three children, but they divorced in 2001, when she returned to live in Thailand.

Prince Friso

Prince Friso was the younger brother of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and in 2003, it was announced he would marry Mabel Wisse Smit.

And although she was welcomed into the Dutch royal family, they were not given official permission to marry.

This meant when they did tie the knot in 2004, Friso gave up his place in the line of succession as well as his place in the Dutch Royal House.

The couple had three children and set up a home in London. In 2012, Friso was involved in a skiing accident in Austria, which left him buried under an avalanche.

He died over a year later due to complications arising from the accident.
