Royals tied balloons to their tiaras at Princess Diana's pre-wedding party

Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer kicked their wedding celebrations off a few days before their big day with a very glitzy ball at Buckingham Palace.

Just 48 hours before the main event the couple invited 800 people, including royalty from around the world and their family and friends to a huge party, and it sounds like it was a night to remember.

Glitter balls and disco lights were hung from the ceiling of the room in Buckingham Palace and guests danced the night away.

Diana's former boss and close friend Mary Robertson was one of the lucky people invited to the celebrations on Monday, July 27.

Speaking on Channel 5's new documentary Charles and Di: The Truth Behind their Royal Wedding, she said: "Certainly the best party I will ever go to."

"Diana steps out of the line rushes forward, comes and gives me this huge hug. She says: 'Mrs Robertson I never expected you to come all this way for my wedding'.

"Of course everyone is wondering who in heavens name we are.

"Charles was wonderful, he so gracious and charming.

"She looked so glamerous.

"Several people including Princess Margaret tied balloons to their tiaras. It really was the royal family letting their hair down."

David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who designed Diana's wedding dress, were also invited.

Elizabeth said: "Glitter balls hanging off the ceiling. Lights being shot off in all directions. It seemed so out of place in Buckingham Palace."

However some claim Diana didn't seem to enjoy the evening as much of some of her guests, and was seen looking rather upset on a number of occasions.

During the evening Charles danced with Diana once, but spent the rest of the evening on the dance floor with his friends - and Camilla.

According to another guest, she was seen crying twice during the celebrations.
