Royals release experienced defender; Lampard rues refereeing reversal; Promoted sides should target French striker - latest Championship news

Reading release McShane

Reading have released experienced Irish defender Paul McShane.

The 33-year-old joined the Royals after being released by Hull in 2015.

He went on to make 103 appearances for the club.

Anssi Jaakkola, Joey van den Berg, George Legg, Danzell Gravenberch and Callum Harriott are also leaving.

Lampard says overturned pen 'like human VAR'

Derby boss Frank Lampard says the decision to overturn a penalty for his side in their play-off semi-final was like 'human VAR'.

Referee Craig Pawson initially gave a penalty when Jayden Bogle went down under a challenge from Jack Harrison, only to reverse the decision and award Leeds a free-kick after appeals from the away side and consulting the linesman.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Lampard said: "I'm not sure if it's a penalty - I think it's one of those you can get or not get.

"The referee gave it, but the linesman has decided it was clear enough to not be a penalty.

"It's like human VAR, but with the actual VAR, the only way they turn decisions, as you hear from the rules, is if it's a clear and obvious challenge. It wasn't - I can't understand it."

Promoted sides to tussle over Maupay

The Evening Standard report that Neal Maupay's performances mean he should be a target for the sides who have been promoted to the Premier League and whoever wins the play-offs.

The Frenchman racked up 25 goals in the Championship last season - topped only by EFL Player of the Year Teemu Pukki.

A fee of £20m is being touted for the striker - who cost the Bees just £1.6m in 2017.
