ANAHEIM, Calif. _ Salvador Perez clubbed a three-run homer in a four-run fourth inning. Jason Vargas allowed three runs across six innings while earning his 10th win. The Royals closed out a California road trip with another victory, beating the Los Angeles Angels 7-3 on Sunday at Angel Stadium.
The performance came just one day after the Angels snapped Kansas City's six-game winning streak on Saturday evening, claiming a 9-0 victory. The Royals finished the road trip with a 7-2 record, improving to 33-35 entering a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox on Monday at Kauffman Stadium.
Perez's three-run shot off reliever Keynan Middleton gave the Royals' 18 homers in nine games against the San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants and the Angels. The number matched the second-most all-time for a road trip in franchise history. Perez finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Mike Moustakas was 1 for 4 with three RBIs, ripping a bases-clearing double to right-center with two outs in the third, erasing an early 2-0 deficit.
As the offense finished off the road trip in style, Vargas notched his major-league-leading 10th victory. He allowed two runs in the first inning, including an RBI double from Kole Calhoun that smacked off the top of the wall in right field. He then worked four straight scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth.
With the lead at 7-2, Vargas loaded the bases by allowing a double to Yunel Escobar, a single to Andrelton Simmons and a walk to C.J. Cron. As reliever Scott Alexander warmed in the bullpen, Royals manager Ned Yost stuck with Vargas.
He limited the damage by coaxing Danny Espinosa into a shallow fly ball to right field before Ben Revere hit a sacrifice fly to center. The inning ended when Juan Graterol popped out to first base.
