Royal Victoria Infirmary issues advice as coronavirus patients being treated in Newcastle

Coronavirus patients being treated in Newcastle pose "no risk" to other patients and visitors, hospital bosses have said.

The two family members diagnosed with the respiratory disease are being treated at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary's specialised infectious disease unit, a spokesperson has confirmed.

But anyone staying in or planning to visit the hospital are perfectly safe, they say.

A spokesperson for the hospital said: "We are currently treating patients with a respiratory illness known as coronavirus.

"Our hospital is one of five highly specialised infectious disease units capable of dealing with this illness.

How to protect yourself against coronavirus

"You should not be concerned - there is no risk to other patients and visitors.

"All of our services are operating today as usual. If you have a hospital appointment, please this attend as planned."

It's been reported that the two people being treated had been staying in a hotel in Yorkshire before falling ill, and being transferred to Newcastle.

The UK risk level from the virus, which has so far killed at least 210 people out of nearly 7,000 global cases, has been raised to "moderate", but the chief medical officer for England has said there are "robust infection control measures in place", and move to calm public fears about the disease, which is only fatal in around 2% of cases.
