Royal Shakespeare Company to host Twitter watch-along of Twelfth Night

The Royal Shakespeare Company is encouraging TV audiences to tune in to watch Adrian Edmondson and Kara Tointon in Twelfth Night.

The pair started in a production that was originally staged in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2017.

The classic Shakespeare comedy, which was first staged three years ago, will premiere on Marquee TV on Saturday April 11.

Viewers can tune into the performing arts streaming service for free as part of a no obligation 30 day trial and the RSC is encouraging them to comment during the show by posting their thoughts on Twitter as the show goes on.

Its original director Christopher Luscombe said: “In these testing times it’s wonderful that theatres are sharing such a range of their productions online.

“I do hope Twelfth Night will help to keep everyone entertained. As the play centres on two lost souls trying to find their way in an unfamiliar world, it may well speak to us all as never before!

“I was blessed with a fantastic cast and production team on this show, and I’m thrilled that their work is being celebrated - especially at a time when live theatre has had to be put on hold. A ‘watch along’, with the audience commenting on Twitter, sounds like a great idea to me - it’ll be fascinating to hear what everyone has to say!”

It comes as theatres closed down by the coronavirus crisis are increasingly going back through their archives to find shows that can be watched online.

Yesterday the National Theatre announced a series of productions including its West End hit One Man, Two Guvnors will he screened weekly on its YouTube channel.
