Royal rumble as Prince Edward plays walking rugby on visit to community project

Prince Edward joined locals in Angus for a game of walking rugby - as he praised the work of a local charity that aims to help people of all ages stay healthy.

The Earl of Forfar, as he is known north of the border, paid a visit to Strathmore Community Rugby Trust at Inchmacoble Park in thw town on Thursday. Donning a red bib, he took part in the more relaxed version of the sport with locals, which is designed to be played by those physically unable to play its pacier cousin.

Known as the Earl of Wessex elsewhere, Edward was granted the title of Earl of Forfar in 2019 as a 55th birthday present from The Queen. He was named Royal Patron of the Strathmore Community Rugby Trust in 2020, and Thursday marked his second visit to the charity to see its work.

He said previously: “It is charities like Strathmore Community Rugby Trust and the brilliant people that run them that provide such wonderful opportunities for all. This is an organisation that the community of Forfar and Angus should be proud of and I sincerely hope that with your support and encouragement will continue to grow and flourish."

The visit marked the fifth birthday of the charity, which supports locals from all walks of life in helping them to play sport regardless of their disability.

Alongside walking rugby it supports children with autism through sport, and promotes "unified rugby" for children and adults with a variety of conditions.

Some of the graduates of its Rugby Academy - tailored towards senior school pupils - have since become volunteer coaches with the trust, promoting a cycle of learning and teaching.

Speaking about the Earl's visit, trust chair Stuart Gray said: “We’re greatly honoured to have His Royal Highness visit the trust again, this time in his role as our Royal Patron, as we mark five years promoting and aiding health and wellbeing for all ages through our rugby-based projects.

“Thanks to all involved, including our funders and sponsors as well as our partners Strathmore RFC, Brechin RFC, Scottish Rugby and Scotland Rugby League, for their continuing support. We’re keen to speak to potential sponsors about projects we plan to launch in the coming months.”
