Royal Papworth Hospital staff wearing donated Peppa Pig scrubs thank public for help during coronavirus pandemic

Members of the public have been praised for going "above and beyond" when creating innovative scrubs for hospital workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Staff at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge have recorded a video message thanking local sewing superheroes who responded to an appeal for more hospital scrubs.

Local residents sent scrubs to hospital workers which included ones with Peppa Pig and Thomas the Tank Engine designs.

Demand for scrubs have been increasing, as roles which previously didn't require them to be worn now do due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The protective gear has to be able to be washed at 60C, and so far 800 items have been donated.

The scrubs feature an array of colourful designs and patterns, alongside more recognisable blue and raspberry-coloured outfits.

In a video clip published on Royal Papworth Hospital's Twitter, staff are gathered in the hospital corridor, showcasing the brilliant designs before shouting together: "Thank you for the scrubs!!"

Assistant practitioner Kevin Kimani told the BBC said: "Since we've asked members of the public to assist us in designing and creating new scrubs, they have gone above and beyond with their creations.

"I have worn Thomas the Tank Engine, George the pig from Peppa Pig, and today I am a sailor."

Mr Kimani added: "All our patients have been loving all the outfits we've been wearing and been paying us great compliments, which is fantastic.

"So we just want to say thank you and we really appreciate all your hard work."

During the coronavirus pandemic, hospital scrubs have also been donated from the musical theatre world and a medical fetish site.
