Books
At the moment I’m making my way through Henry David Thoreau’s Walden. Though his idealism is exhausting at times , he draws you in and reminds you what is and what isn’t essential in this life, and how important our relationship to nature really is. He’s also the world’s greatest proponent of DIY.
TV
I’ve been enjoying episodes of Inspector Montalbano (BBC). Complex crime solving with a luscious Sicilian countryside and sea backdrop. Inimitable characters — and the sun! On Netflix, I’ve been watching Ozark; the travails of a family involved in very shady business dealings. Fascinating and sometimes very disturbing to watch. Oh, and endless reruns of Friends and Mike and Molly — and CNN.
Film
The Best Year of Our Lives (1946) is a poignant flick about GIs returning to normal life and the difficulties they face. Also Shirley Valentine is brilliant.
Music
Erroll Garner, jazz pianist — no musician in the history of music had the exuberance of this man. Sheer joy. I’ve also been listening to Sibelius. Symphony No 6 was previously unknown to me. The beginning is one of those things that pierce the heart, with its introspection and wide vistas. I try to play Mozart Piano Sonatas myself, they are miniature operas without words. Genius.
