Royal Opera House announces first live concerts from its venue since closure

The Royal Opera House has announced a new series of live concerts, the first since closing its doors in March.

The Live from Covent Garden series will begin on June 13, hosted by Royal Opera House director of music Antonio Pappano and the BBC’s Anita Rani. Each concert will be broadcast live from the venue itself, which still remains closed to the public, and feature a range of opera and ballet.

The first concert will feature the world premiere of a new work by Wayne McGregor , the Resident Choreographer of the Royal Ballet, and performances of works by Benjamin Britten, George Frideric Handel, George Butterworth and Mark-Anthony Turnage.

It will be free to watch on YouTube and Facebook, with subsequent concerts on June 20 and June 27 available to view live and on demand for £4.99.

The concerts will be curated by Pappano alongside Director of the Royal Ballet Kevin Hare and Director of Opera Oliver Mears, with further details to be announced.

The Royal Opera House has been closed since March 17 after the UK Government issued public health advice to avoid large gatherings to stop the spread of coronavirus. Since this time, it has been regularly broadcasting free recordings from its back catalogue.
