Royal Navy veteran's ashes wash up in bottle on last beach he visited with family

A bottle containing a Royal Navy veteran's ashes have washed up on the last beach he visited.

Teresa put her dad's ashes in a bottle and set it out to sea as a final adventure.

Ten days later they were discovered bobbing in the water off the Cornish coast - the last place the family had a holiday together in 2012.

Locals have described the discovery as a "miracle", "amazing" and "incredible", reports CornwallLive.

Kayaker Tim Noon discovered the bottle containing Frank Southworth's remains off Portmellon beach.

Teresa said: "I get goosebumps thinking about it too - that was the last beach we visited as a family before my dad got ill. I am in no doubt that my dad took himself to the beautiful beach of Portmellon. It feels like fate.

"Apparently my dad travelled 100 nautical miles, which he would have loved as he was a real adventurer and a keen fisherman."

Frank, who was in the Royal Navy and a former Metropolitan Police officer, died in January aged 88. He met his wife Maureen while in the Navy at Dartmouth.

Teresa sent the bottle out to sea from Whitsand 10 days before with a note asking whoever found it to let her know where he had got to. She thinks her dad would have loved that she did it while on a jet ski for the first time in her life.

Tim initially thought the bottle contained the ashes of someone's pet. It was only when he got back to shore that he found the remains in a zip-locked bag and message and a poem.

There were also details about Frank and how Teresa had sent her dad on a "final adventure" asking whoever found the bottle to sprinkle his ashes where they were found. Tim fulfilled her wish and sprinkled Frank's ashes at Portmellon.

Teresa contact details were included in the message, so Tim contacted her and followed her wishes.

"It's absolutely staggering - people get goosebumps when they hear that," said Tim.

Next weekend, Teresa is planning to visit the shack at Portmellon where the note, bottle and photos of Frank are on display.
