A Royal Navy frigate has tracked a Chinese warship as it passed through the English Channel.

Portsmouth-based HMS Westminster was scrambled to monitor the progress of the destroyer Xian as it entered the Dover Straits on Saturday.

The ship recently escorted Xian as it returned from participating in Russia's annual Navy Days event in St Petersburg with HMS St Albans shadowing it up the Channel.

Commander Will Paston, Westminster's commanding officer, said: "The Royal Navy routinely monitors other country's warships through territorial waters as part of our ongoing mission in support of the defence of the UK.

"The Xian conducted herself in a safe and professional manner throughout."

Westminster has been attached to a Nato task group since March and has been practising its anti-submarine warfare skills off the west coast of Norway inside the Arctic Circle, as well as patrolling UK waters.
