Royal Navy patrol boats were spotted in Salford today - here's why

Royal Navy patrol boats were spotted in Salford Quays today — but naval chiefs say ‘nothing is out of the ordinary’.

The two vessels were spotted this morning by passers-by moored up outside the Lowry Theatre.

An official government sign on each of the patrol vessels read: “Ministry of Defence Area. Keep Clear.”

Despite the unusual sight, officials from the Navy say that their presence was routine.

“As part of their role in supporting training for our University Royal Naval Units and wider regional engagement, Royal Navy Archer Class patrol boats have been to Salford”, a spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News.

The spokesperson added that the boats’ appearance on the Quays won’t be the last time they are seen in Salford.

They said: “You are likely to see them, or other units of our Coastal Forces Squadron, in the area in the coming weeks. For more information on the Archer Class see here .

“Information about the University Royal Naval Units can be found here .”

The Manchester and Salford University Royal Navy Unit aims to ‘broaden Naval understanding’ and ‘develop undergraduates’ into military leaders, according to the force.

The unit is affiliated to HMS Duncan and the Tallow Chandlers Company.
