Royal Navy gunner's career change leads to the pages of Vogue

A former Royal Navy gunner found her skills on the pages of Vogue magazine after a drastic career change.

Lindsey Edwards, 46, from New Brighton, Wirral, said she had loved her job in the navy, but when she was medically discharged she had to find a new job.

After a brief stint working in social services, the mum-of-two turned her hand to face painting.

Lindsey said: "I started out in a little garden shed by the fairground in New Brighton painting children's faces.

"I then started getting into special effect make up and took a course at Liverpool City College and a foundation degree in specialised make up.

"I just loved it. And of course it was a dream to be featured in a magazine like Vogue, but you never think it will happen."

As a freelance make up artist, Lindsey was asked to take part in London Fashion Week in 2017, she said she was blown away by the opportunity.

She said: "I was just really fortunate to be part of the team and part of designer Kolhagob Barba's show.

"The following year I was asked back as head of make up for the show, which was just incredible.

"I learnt so much working at those shows, they challenged me and my skills so much.

"I had been nervous at first, worried that people would be b****y, like the stereotypes you sometimes see.

"But no one was like that, they were all so lovely, the models, the designers, everyone backstage.

"It was so intense though, you had barely any time to do a full face of make up and on so many different skin tones."

Following the show, Lindsey was shocked when she spotted her make up skills on the Vogue website, she said: "It was just amazing to see, the models with make looks I had created with 'Vogue' in huge letters, it was incredible."

As part of her work, Lindsey has also worked with Granada TV and theatres but that stopped when covid hit.

During the pandemic, Lindsey's freelance work stopped and she saw a salon on Victoria Road in New Brighton was for sale

She said: "I lost my mum to breast cancer when I was 17, but my dad, Jimmy, who is 77 now, has always been my biggest supporter.

"He just told me to go for it and take the plunge, so I invested in the salon and gave it a revamp.

"There has been such a huge regeneration in New Brighton, it has a real Lark Lane [Liverpool] feel about it and that is just ideal for me."

Mum to Owen, 20, and Caitlin, 18, Lindsey offers a variety of beauty treatments and still provides special effect make up.

She said: "I was up the wall for Halloween, which I loved, I wish it could be Halloween every week.

"I get also sorts of requests, but I think one of the most ambitious was when a man asked to be transformed into the Beast from Beauty and the Beast.

"I made and coloured prosthetics and added hair, it took two to three hours preparation and took one and a half hours to paint onto his face.

"It can be such a challenge going from special effects to getting someone ready for a night out, but I love it."

The relaunch of Indulge on Victoria Road is on November 11, 6-8pm where Lindsey and her team will be doing demonstrations of their services. You can find Lindsey on her Instagram here.
