Royal Mint will bring out a special Wallace and Gromit themed coin

Royal Mint will bring out a special commemorative coin in honour of eccentric inventor Wallace and and his silent, true-brains-of-the-operation dog Gromit.

The coins will be released later this year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "A Grand Day Out" ,

Enjoyed by young and old, the claymation comedy series was created by Nick Park and Aardman Animations and has been a British institution since it first hit our screens back in 1999.

Along with "A Grand Day Out" (1989), "The Wrong Trousers" (1993) and "A Close Shave" (1995), the fourth installment - "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" - was released in 2005. Each have been a staple of Christmas TV here in the UK for the best part of three decades.

Produced in Bristol, Wallace and Gromit isn't the only classic piece of British popular culture that have been immortalised by Royal Mint.

Earlier this year, the coin producers released a special range in honour of Paddington Bear , the beloved character from children's literature created by British author Michael Bond and British illustrator Peggy Fortnum in the late 1950s.

Other characters that have been given the 'Royal Mint treatment' include The Gruffalo , The Snowman and Mrs Tittlemouse, Peter Rabbit and more from esteemed author Beatrix Potter.

Royal Mint is owned by Her Majesty's Treasury. As well as supplying all of the nation's coinage, they produce specially-contracted requests including medals awarded to OBE's, medals awarded to the British Armed Forces and the medals handed out at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
