Royal Mint to produce special Wallace and Gromit coin

Bristol’s Wallace and Gromit are to feature on a commemorative coin – to celebrate a special anniversary.

The coins will be released by the Royal Mint later this year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "A Grand Day Out.”

Enjoyed by young and old, the comedy series was created by Bristol-based Nick Park and Aardman Animations and has been a British institution since it first hit TV screens back in 1999, Belfast Live reports.

Along with "A Grand Day Out" (1989), "The Wrong Trousers" (1993) and "A Close Shave" (1995), the fourth installment - "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" - was released in 2005.

Each have been a staple of Christmas TV viewing in the UK for the best part of three decades.

Wallace and Gromit isn't the only classic piece of British popular culture to have been immortalised by Royal Mint.

Earlier this year, the coin producers released a special range in honour of Paddington Bear, the beloved character from children's literature created by British author Michael Bond and British illustrator Peggy Fortnum in the late 1950s.

Other characters that have been given the 'Royal Mint treatment' include The Gruffalo , The Snowman and Mrs Tittlemouse, Peter Rabbit and more from esteemed author Beatrix Potter.
