Royal Mint launches new Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit £5 coin - how you can buy one

Coin collectors can now buy a new Peter Rabbit £5 piece from the Royal Mint.

It is the first time the cute Beatrix Potter character has featured on a £5 coin - having previously only been available on 50ps.

The new £5 coin features Peter Rabbit and his family as his mother warns him not to get into trouble.

It features the text: "Now run along, and don't get into mischief, I'm going out."

The new design went on sale today in three denominations, with the cheapest being the £5 Brilliant Uncirculated coin that costs £13.

The new priciest costs £95 for a £2 one ounce silver proof coin, followed by a one ounce gold proof £100 coin that’ll set you back an eye-watering £2,315.

All three Peter Rabbit coins are available to buy on the Royal Mint website now.

As these are uncirculated pieces, you won't find them in your spare change in the supermarket or other stores.

Peter Rabbit 50p coins have been popular among collectors, with one selling for a staggering £621 on eBay in 2019.

Royal Mint designer Ffion Gwillim created the design using original storybook illustrations, settling on an image showing the whole Rabbit family together.

She said: “What I really like about this particular illustration is that it has a great narrative element.

“As a designer I always look to tell a story, just as Beatrix Potter did in her unique and wonderful way.”

Clare Maclennan, divisional director for commemorative coin at The Royal Mint said: “The £5 crown is truly a wonderful piece for collecting, with the larger surface area showcasing The Royal Mint’s abilities as designers and creators of coinage.

“It has also allowed us to capture the magical world of Peter Rabbit, which deserves the space to be able to tell such a timeless narrative.”
