Royal Mile incident Edinburgh: Man dies after falling out of window on busy city centre street

Edinburgh's Royal Mile was in lockdown yesterday evening after a man fell out of a window and reportedly died.

Edinburgh Live reported that emergency services had rushed to the scene at the busy High Street, near North Bridge, shortly before 6pm (July 21).

Photos from the scene showed a heavy police presence and there were reports on social media of blood on the ground.

Part of the street was cordoned off near The World's End bus stop for several hours with traffic diverted away from the area. However the road has now been reopened.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “At around 5.40pm emergency services in Edinburgh attended at the High Street following a report of a man having fallen from a window."

On Twitter, one person wrote: "Lots of emergency personnel about after from what I heard from a shopkeeper that someone fell from a building onto the the Royal Mile, would have been so harrowing for locals and tourists alike along with those sitting in seats outside the café 10ft away from the scene, so sad."

The incident occurred as thousands of fans descended on Edinburgh Castle for The Proclaimers performance last night on the Esplanade.
