Royal Marines test new drones and robots in combat exercises near Glasgow

The Royal Marines have been testing new drones and robots in combat exercises near Glasgow.

The tests have taken place at Police Scotland's Jackton Training Centre in East Kilbride, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Based at Faslane Naval base, the 43 Commando Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines are the last line of defence protecting the nation’s Trident missiles and the machines which carry them.

They have been taking part in what the Ministry of Defence call "close-quarters combat exercise" at both the indoor and urban training facilities at Jackton to keep them "razor sharp for their operations" as well as afford them the chance to look at the new technology.

Captain James Spencer RM, Second-in-Command of P-Squadron, 43 Commando, said: "The facilities at Jackton Police College allowed us to develop a concept for the use of the Remotely Piloted Aerial System and figure out how we would integrate it within an urban environment.

"Such technology is a game changer in the face of a threat.  It informs commanders and troops on the ground and allows them to make tactical actions swiftly and effectively."

As well as drones for battlefield analysis, the Royal Marines have also been testing a ‘Throwbot’ - a small remotely-operated robot that can be thrown in to a potentially dangerous area to quickly give a picture of what is happening on the other side, so the marines can make a clear decision on the way to tackle the threat.
