Royal Marines pay tribute at funeral of WWII hero who survived Forth raid

One of Scotland's oldest war heroes was given full military honours at his funeral in Edinburgh on Friday.

Former Royal Marine Arthur Walters died aged 102 earlier this month. At his funeral on Friday, serving marines saluted his coffin as he made his final journey.

Mr Walters was one of the last survivors on the on the River Forth.

He was on board HMS Southampton when it was struck by a Luftwaffe bomb which passed through the ship before detonating in the water.

It was the first aerial attack on Britain during the Second World War, and was the first time Spitfires shot down German planes.

Mr Walters served with the Royal Marines for 25 years and rose to the rank of colour sergeant. He went on to serve in Burma, the Atlantic and Africa.

During his funeral at Warriston Crematorium, his marine beret was placed on top of his coffin alongside his medals.

Mark McCraw, Scotland branch secretary of the Royal Marines Association, told the Daily Record: “Arthur had a close shave whilst serving on HMS Southampton when the first air raid of World War 2 took place near South Queensferry.

“The Southampton was protecting cargo ships in the North Sea but on October 16 1939 it was stationed in the Firth of Forth when German bombers flew unchallenged up the river on a mission, which it is now known was to blow up HMS Hood - flagship of the Royal Navy."

Mr Walters had a drink of Guinness each day well into his old age.

At his 100th birthday party in August 2017, he was also given a copy of his service record and a framed replica of the form he signed to join up more than 80 years before at the age of 17.

A family member said they were "devastated" after his death following a short illness.
