The head of the Royal Marines is backing our call for a doorstep two-minute silence on Remembrance Sunday in tribute to our fallen heroes.
Major General Matt Holmes, Commandant General Royal Marines, said the nation should reflect on the sacrifices of our war dead to get through tough times.
He said: “We face many challenges today as a society but our forefathers who laid down their lives faced worse.
“We should remember them all and reflect on the opportunities they have given us, no matter how tough things seem.”
Social distancing restrictions will limit numbers at Remembrance ceremonies across the country, with the wreath laying at the Cenotaph in Whitehall closed to the public for the first time in its 100-year history.
So the Mirror is asking people to stay safe and stand outside their homes at 11am on November 8 for the two-minute silence.
Major General Holmes, 53, is
an Afghanistan veteran who commanded 42 Commando in Helmand during fierce fighting against the Taliban in 2006-2007.
He said: “Remembrance is a chance to stop and reflect on the sacrifice of those who have gone before us, young and old, who gave their futures for ours.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Labour leader Keir Starmer and the Chief of the Defence Staff General Sir Nick Carter have also backed our campaign for a doorstep tribute.
