Royal Manchester Children's Hospital investigating after children left 'unwell' during dialysis treatment

An investigation is underway at Royal Manchester Children's hospital after an incident left children 'unwell' during dialysis treatment.

It is not known exactly when the incident took place but Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust said it was recent.

The children affected are still being treated at the hospital but are said to now be 'well'.

In a statement, the trust said 'a small number of patients' had been affected.

According to The Sunday Times, three children fell ill as a result of the incident.

Dialysis is a treatment given to people suffering a loss of kidney function.

The Trust said they could offer no further comment on the nature of what happened pending a 'full investigation'.

Royal Manchester Children's Hospital treats around 185,000 patients a year and is the busiest in the country.

All hospitals currently have restrictions in place on visitors due to the coronavirus pandemic and some services have been moved.

A spokesperson for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust said: " Patient safety and care is our top priority and we are undertaking an investigation into a recent incident at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital involving a small number of patients who became unwell during dialysis treatment.

"All patients are well and continue to be monitored, and their families are being kept fully informed.

"A full investigation is underway and therefore we are unable to comment further."
