Royal Mail is scrapping one of its post delivery days across UK due to coronavirus

Royal Mail is stopping its Saturday post deliveries due to coronavirus.

The 'temporary' measure will be in place from this weekend onwards, meaning that no letters or other post will be delivered over the weekend.

A statement on the Royal Mail website said: "Our postmen and postwomen are working very hard across the UK in challenging conditions.

"As we said at the start of the coronavirus crisis, there will be some disruption to services. Relevant factors include high levels of coronavirus-related absences and necessary social distancing measures.

"We understand the importance of the postal service in keeping the UK connected at this time. We have also listened to our hard-working colleagues who have asked us to ease the additional burden on them if possible. As a result, we are making some temporary changes to postal services."

From 2 May the company will "temporarily no longer deliver letters on a Saturday."

They said that they will still continue to provide a letter delivery service from Monday to Friday as normal.

Special Delivery, Tracked, all non-account services and most other parcels will all still continue to operate from Monday to Saturday across the country.

The statement added: "Customers should continue to post both letters and parcels as usual on Saturday.

"We will continue our Saturday collections from businesses, post offices and post boxes as normal."

The courier company has already made a number of changes in a bid "to protect the health and safety of our people and the general public".

Earlier this month it announced changes to its opening times as well as temporarily extending the period of time given to its customers to collect parcels.

It also said to protect workers and customers as much as possible, the Royal Mail is minimising contact during delivery.
