Royal Mail could 'scrap Saturday letter deliveries' in huge changes to service

Royal Mail could axe letter deliveries on a Saturday and 'signed for' parcels as part of a huge shake-up.

The postal service is looking for ways to cut costs and compete with the likes of Amazon, DPD and Hermes as part of a six-month review.

Royal Mail, which was privatised in 2015, is currently required to deliver letters for a fixed price, six days per week.

However, the postal service’s new UK boss Simon Thompson is hoping to focus more on parcel deliveries, which have boomed thanks to a rise in online shopping during the pandemic.

With letters in decline, bosses say the laws on six-day deliveries is outdated, costly, and leaves the postal service at a disadvantage against rivals.

Signed-for deliveries could also be scrapped customers appear to be increasingly happy for parcels to be left in a safe place or with a neighbour, the Telegraph reports.

Mr Thompson confirmed a review of Royal Mail's "whole product suite and offering" has started, and a final decision is expected early in 2022.

Ofcom, the communications regulator, has backed the proposal to scrap Saturday letter deliveries.

It said Royal Mail could save between £125million and £225million and customer demand could still be met, according to the publication.
