Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport confirms 76 confirmed cases as outbreak continues

An outbreak of coronavirus at the Royal Gwent Hospital has resulted in 76 positive cases, a health board has said.

Staff at the hospital in Newport have been responding to a Covid-19 outbreak since it was confirmed by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board on Monday, October 12.

When the announcement was first made 14 patients had tested positive for coronavirus and no staff were said to be affected.

Seven days later, an Aneurin Bevan University Health Board spokesperson said cases have now risen to 58 patients and 18 staff members.

The hospital has established a no visiting policy in response to the outbreak, with only agreed visits to maternity and paediatric patients permitted.

Three wards in the hospital remain closed to admissions.

A spokesperson for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board said: “We are continuing to manage a Covid-19 outbreak affecting three wards at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

“A total of 58 patients and 18 staff members in these wards have now tested positive for the virus.

“Our Outbreak Control Team are managing the situation and the three wards remain closed to admissions until the ward areas are clear of infection.

“We are continuing a ‘no visiting’ policy at the hospital, with the exception of visits agreed for maternity and paediatric patients.”

It comes as Wales prepares to head into a second national lockdown for two week to break the rapidly increasing spread of coronavirus.

A fire-break lockdown will come into force in Wales from Friday, October 23, and run until Monday, November 9.

People in Wales must work from home unless they are critical workers, all non-essential retail, gyms, leisure centres, bars, restaurants and hospitality must close, and all indoor and outdoor gatherings with people outside your household are banned.
